Great, when it's not leaking 2 out of 5 stars.

My son gave me this blender as a gift because I was frustrated with blenders that couldn't handle ice. This one handled ice, whole frozen strawberries--pretty much anything I put inside of it.
Time passed, and I noticed a horrible smell coming from the blender. That's when I realized that, rather than just cleaning the inside like I had with previous blenders, this one needed to be taken apart and cleaned every single time it was used. Liquids and seeds pool and collect in the grooves of the gasket. So, I started cleaning the gasket after each use--and found that getting it screwed back on perfectly was essential. If the gasket wasn't perfectly centered, if the base wasn't attached just so, it would leak.
Then the blade shaft grew loose. My husband ordered a new (expensive!) blade shaft. It didn't work with the old pitcher; the design had been changed. He called the company; they sent a new pitcher at no charge. This time there was a new system for screwing the pitcher on--and it had a warning not to over-tighten. So, I screwed it on until it felt tight, being careful not to over-tighten, as instructed. Then I poured in the two cups of milk for the smoothies I was making. And turned to walk away. And turned back when I heard the horrible sound of liquid running onto the floor. Turns out that although I'd screwed it on tightly, it wasn't tight enough.
My mechanical husband took it apart and was disgusted to find that the poor design of the blender means that any leaks go right down the middle of the blender immersing the entire motor in liquid. A better engineered product would protect the motor from potential leaks (and just reading through these reviews makes it clear that Breville has had many customer service complaints about leaking!).
If, when the blender is reassembled (after drying out for a couple of days) it still works, I will in the future give it a test run over the sink with water in it before trusting it to messier ingredients.
Editorial Review:
Breville's IKON Blender has a single wipe clean control pad with no crevices for easy cleaning. 5 speed setting include mix, chop, blend, liquefy and puree.
