Don't buy this - blender & warranty are worthless 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the Braun 5 speed blender online, used it several times a week for a 4 months, and then it just died. When I called Braun, the customer service rep took all my details (name, blender serial #, etc.), then asked what I had last blended. I replied 'fruit smoothie' and was told that my warranty was therefore no longer valid since the blender shouldn't be used to crush frozen fruit or ice. The customer service rep then gave me the address of an appliance repair outlet almost an 1 hour drive away and told me to take it there to get it repaired. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM BRAUN AGAIN.

Compare this to my experience with Hamilton Beach. When my electric kettle died within the warranty period, I called them and they promptly mailed me a prepaid shipping label. I sent the kettle via UPS and had my new replacement less than 2 weeks later at no cost.

Perfect smoothie maker! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm very please with this little blender. Holds quite a bit and was powerful enough to handle hard, frozen fruit. Haven't tried ice yet but I know it will do great. It blends quickly and the dispenser actually works great! It's made of plastic so may crack if handled too rough, but overall I'm extremely pleased. Does exactly what it's supposed to.

Back to Basics SJR1X Smoothie Blast 4 out of 5 stars.

Chops ice good. Does a good job making Smoothie's. A bit
noisy. Good price / value.

works okay, but LOUD 3 out of 5 stars.

I got this smoothie maker several years ago for my husband. It does work okay, but this is the loudest little blender ever! It's a bit difficult to clean, too, especially the spout. After many, many smoothies, the poor little thing is having problems. I'd get another one except for the noise factor.

Editorial Review:

The Back to Basics Smoothie Blast offers the consumer an excellent value. This comes complete with stir stick and dispensing valve to make your favorite smoothies at a price everyone can afford.

Powerful and reliable - from a pro cook 5 out of 5 stars.

I've had only great experiences with the Viking Pro Han Blender. I use it several times a week. The dual speeds work fine, the motor is powerful enough to chop even very hard foods, and after many months, I've not had any problems. I've tried at least 5 other brands, and this one is a solid piece of equipment. Another reviewer had problems with his/her unit and customer service, but I've had only great performance from it (buy the optional chopping attachment to get the best use of it).

Amazingly powerful motor, solid construction 5 out of 5 stars.

I've used several other hand blenders from Braun and Kitchen-Aid, and while some of those models were very capable, this is in a completely different class. This isn't just an "upgrade," it's an entirely different device. The Kitchen-Aid and certain Braun models are fine for most tasks, but they are like kids' toys compared to the Viking. This hand blender has so much more power than those models, which makes it much quicker and more efficient at its tasks. I mostly use it for pureeing soups, a task that takes forever with those lesser brands, and never comes out perfectly smooth. My practice was always to strain the soups through a fine-mesh sieve after blending, because it was always necessary--there would be little fibrous chunks left over, and the puree would never be as silky as I wanted. But with the Viking that's completely unnecessary. For a big pot of butternut squash bisque, for instance, it takes about 15 seconds with the Viking to get the entire thing silky smooth, whereas with one of Braun's "professional" models, I'd have to blend for a minute, then wait for the unit to cool down, then blend more, then finally force the puree through a sieve. I should note that the Viking's manual also recommends only one minute of continuous use--the difference is that I can't imagine anything taking more than a minute with this thing.

This Viking model creates such a vortex in the pot that it ensures no chunks are left by cycling through all of the liquid very rapidly. For the same reason, the puree gets silky smooth in almost no time.

You know how there's a big difference between the power of a Kitchen-Aid stand mixer and a Kitchen-Aid hand mixer? Well, it's the same way between a really nice consumer blender and a Kitchen-Aid or Braun hand blender. With the Viking, there is no such difference. This is as powerful as any consumer-level blender I've used.

In addition, the construction feels extremely solid. It's heavy, and it's stainless steel, which also means the business end can go in the dishwasher, if that's your thing. But it's still ergonomically designed so that it feels great in your hand. My one complaint is that you have to hold the button as long as you want to keep it going. I wish there were a way to set it to stay on a particular speed setting.

Editorial Review:

Professional power that anyone can handle. Viking's heavy-duty design incorporates a no-slip grip and two speed pulse control for an appliance that emphasizes performance without giving up its good looks. One-year warranty.

Works great, short lived 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have been through two of this model. The asymmetric jar design is superb for blending. I used this blender to make 300 smoothies - and it did a fantastic job. After number 300, however, it will no longer turn on. Using my handy magnetic AC power probe (no contact required), I found that only one side of the motor coils were getting power. After getting it replaced under warranty (for $6 handling), the replacement again made 300 smoothies over the course of 4 months - it also simply wouldn't turn on anymore. Same problem. I guess the 3 year warranty assumes you make no more than 2 smoothies a week. I will get it replaced under warranty again to keep as a spare, but will try some other brands and models looking for better durability. The $400 Blendtec and Vitamix are not an option because I insist on a glass jar.

Easy to Use and Clean, Sturdy! 5 out of 5 stars.

This blender is substantial, with a nice, heavy jar, a rubbery lid that seals well and easy to use controls. I make banana smoothies with it almost every day. It's easy to clean.

Stalls out 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I am now on my second Breville mixer since March (six months). I use the thing twice a day to blend one half cup cottage cheese with three tablespoons of fish oil & a little milk. After a month or two, the mixer will stall out. At first I thought I was relaxing the pressure on the buttons but don't think that's it. I'll be returning this second one to Williams Sonoma for store credit. I'm here on amazon to find a different brand. The Breville does clean up very easily -- perhaps with less intensive use it would be a fine machine -- not for me.

Editorial Review:

Soups, smoothies, shakes? all in the palm of your hand. This 9.6-volt cordless hand blender doesn't restrict you to a particular area of the kitchen, so you can blend wherever it's most convenient. Use the patented loop attachment for smoothies and protein shakes or the surgical-grade stainless steel blade attachment for classic blending. When you're finished, simply return the blender to the base to charge the batteries for another 20 minutes of continuous use. One-year limited warranty.

10 months later... 1 out of 5 stars.

loved this blender for the 10 months i had it ... then the cheap plastic bottom cracked and everything leaked out all over table. Now it's worthless because you can't replace teh canister. If you're looking for a blender that will last the whole year then this one is not for you.

Leaks too much 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Good strong casing, but the wave motion gimmick created by the shape accelerates the liquids too much, and in tandem with the relatively highly tuned speed settings, this blender frequently hits the lid with your blendings. The lid then sprays stuff out in various directions in thin, high speed streams. I would not recommend this blender although I have used other Hamilton Beach blenders with success, and I do so every day. This one just happens to suck because it is tuned to spin too fast, and then the lid can't even keep the contents from spraying out.

Editorial Review:

The Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex blender features a Wave-Action system that forces your drink mixture down into the blades for smooth results. The DuraBlend jar has an extra-large, 56-ounce capacity. The blender features 10 speeds and operates on 600 watts of peak power.

Seems OK thus far 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It blends milkshakes and smoothies fine, but I've been really careful with it and only had it for a week. I only crush a few ice cubes at a time instead of packing it with ice cubes and fruits all at once. The container is shaped in a way that tosses the liquid from the base towards the top to aid mixing. Would've been better if the bottom of the container was stainless steel instead of plastic, but I suppose for 50 bucks this is a well-functioning blender. The sticker label that marks "Power" and "Speed" etc on the control panel started peeling but it stuck back on after I pushed it in without additional adhesive.
