With complete control over both time and temperature that will please the most advanced home coffee roasting hobbiests, the controls and instructions are so easy that beginners can produce professional results the very first day. The clear roast chamber makes it very easy to view the roasting process, a must have feature that eliminates burnt or under roasted coffee. The Gene Cafe can hold up to 10 oz. of unroasted green coffee which will yield up to an 8 oz. batch of fully roasted coffee. The thoughtfully integrated safety features (that are lacking in most home roasters) include auto shutoff, overheat sensors, and a clear safety cover to prevent burnt fingers. Ideal for a household of 1 to 2 coffee drinkers, it takes just 5-8 minutes to roast the green coffee beans with a 2 minute cool-down cycle. The Freshroast has a mechanical timer and the chaff collector is simple yet effective. Because the roast chamber is smaller and the roast cycle is shorter than other home coffee roasting machines, it uses less energy to roast a batch of beans. Because of its basic design, this is the roaster that will outlast all the fancy, computer chip controlled machines out there. If you are a serious home coffee roaster, it is worth having one of these just in case your other roaster fails. Because of the mechanical timer and the fast roast time, this unit requires a little more attention to achieve your favorite roast. This is a simple matter of monitoring the bean color and aroma, then manually turning the machine to cool when the beans are perfect. The Fresh Roast Plus 8 home coffee roaster is the latest version of this popular model, with a new timer that goes to 8 minutes and a slightly slower roast profile for more body. The Fresh Roast series has been the starter roaster for many because of its entry level price tag, but dont let the price fool you - this machine can perform, producing a quality roast. The roast capacity is approximately 3 oz of green coffee beans, yielding enough to brew 12-14 cups of coffee. As a fluid bed (hot air) roaster, the roast cycle is fairly short, yielding a brighter flavor than a drum roaster. This is great for accentuating the differences between different coffee varietals. The machine operates relatively quietly for a hot air roaster and is very simple to use. Fill the beans and turn the dial and in about 6 minutes for an average roast, the beans will start cooling. There are no difficult setting to program. There are two variables you can vary when experimenting with your roasts if you are so inclined: the amount of green beans you put in the roaster and the amount of time you set the roaster for. While we do recommend playing with these variables some, keep in mind, even a less than ideal roast will typically produce coffee that is far superior to any coffee commonly available on the market today. The reason why most coffee you can purchase is already stale. Experts recommend using coffee beans within 2 to maybe 3 weeks after roasting for best flavor. After that period, the flavor starts degrading quickly. Ground coffee goes stale even quicker since more surface of the coffee is exposed to air. Green coffee beans in their un-roasted form can be stored for up to 2 years. The coffee does not rapidly go stale until after it is roasted. Plus you save money too since green coffee beans are typically much less expensive than roasted. Home coffee roasting is one of the big trends for home coffee consumers. There is no fresher way to make your coffee. New Plus 8 model with improvements! The Fresh Roast Plus 8 is designed to roast approximately 3 ounces of coffee beans at one time. 3 ounces of roasted beans will yield 12-16 cups of drip coffee. Roast times average about 6 minutes with a 2 minute "cool down" period. The Fresh Roast Plus is the easiest to use roaster available today. It is also the simplest, and the most durable. We recommend it as a starter roaster because of its ease of use, but many long-time home roasters still use it regularly...because it's a good roaster. There is only one control on the Fresh Roast, that being the timer knob. It is a mechanical timer with stamped markings on the knob for roasting minutes and the "cool" cycle. Being rather small, it is not extremely accurate as a timer, but it controls the heating element and the fan. During the roast cycle it turns on the heating element and the fan; the heater switches off when the roaster enters the cool cycle. There is also an audible difference in pitch when the heater switches off, so it is easy to tell when the cool cycle starts. The ROASTING CHAMBER is a clear glass tube and the new ones are marked with a "fill to here" line to make it easy. The roasting chambers are significantly improved over the previous units: the base ring is now made of an aluminum alloy and virtually break-proof, the glass itself is higher quality and more uniform in size and shape, and the handle is, well...a nice handle.
