Ultimately disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.

Let me start off by saying that I worked for very large coffee retailer (you can probably guess whom)for MANY years, and have had extensive training in the coffee making process -- from growing, harvesting, drying and roasting to grinding and brewing, so maybe my review is a bit harsh.

Anyway, I purchased this product in a moment of desperation because I wanted an inexpensive grinder to make my coffee in the morning while I save enough money to buy a nicer espresso machine. I have a French press and use (well, USED) the grinder on a daily basis. I didn't spend much on it, so I didn't expect peak performance; and at first, it got the job done. My major complaint was, as other reviewers said, it doesn't grind evenly. Even on the most coarse setting, you will wind up with some large chunks, some the appropriate size, and some fine dust. It doesn't matter if you fill it and grind 12 cups at a time, or grind it little by little, or what setting it's on.

Now, I haven't had the blasted thing but four months, and it's already out of commission. The blades are have dulled considerable and yesterday it died completely -- won't even turn on. My recommendation? Don't waste your money on this plastic piece of junk, no matter how dire your need for a grinder. I wouldn't buy this again. In fact, based on this experience, I'm not sure I would buy ANY other Hamilton Beach product. If you love coffee enough to take the time to grind and brew your own, you obviously prefer a superior coffee experience, and to brew the best cup, you need grounds of a consistent size. You also need a grinder that works. Which isn't this one. Spend a little extra and get a burr grinder.

On my second Cuisinart Grinder 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought one of these new a couple years ago, and loved it. It did perfectly, everything I wanted a grinder to do. But in less than a year, as many reviewers have posted, it just up and quit.

For the past 6 months, I've been grinding my beans in the store or using my Magic Bullet. My husband worked nights and slept in mornings, so I didn't miss the loud motor. But now that he's back on early morning shift and I'm alone in the morning at coffee-making time, I decided to look for a new grinder.

I wasn't going to get another Cuisinart, as I just don't find the quality of their appliances to be very good. But I looked and read reviews of every other burr grinder made in a similar price range (I can't afford the $200-$500 machines) and none of them seemed to have the same bundle of features, like a hopper that holds a 1/2 pound of beans, the easy dial to select fine/coarse, the auto-select amount of beans you want ground, etc. And those that did seemed to have the SAME number of complaints that they one day just quit working.

So I had just decided I would come here, take my chances, and order another Cuisinart, when while browsing in Big Lots (retail discount store) I found a refurbished one for $20. I guess it's telling that there are so many refurbished ones available. Yes, it does look and perform like brand new. It also doesn't seem as noisy as my former one but I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. But it's an attractive machine and I'm really happy to have it back, I missed it. If it only lasts a year again, I'll feel like I got my $20 bucks worth.

I would recommend to anyone, save your money and a little frustration and get a refurbished and not a new one. So many people report that they just up and quit, that I bet in every case, what's been replaced is the motor that quit working in a year's time or less. So these refurbs are going to perform and last as long as brand new ones. Which probably ain't that long. But I would be happy to replace it annually for $20.

-Guys.

----[Especially anyone who is upset with their purchase of a ten or fifteen-dollar coffee grinder.]

Lend Me Your Ears.

This thing rocks.

I bought one of these about four years ago when I was just learning how to drink coffee.
I got it for ten bucks at the Longs Drugs down the street.

It worked then, when I was making joe with my roommate's hand-me-down Mr. Coffee crap machine.
It works now, with the beautiful Breville espresso maker I (we) just got as a wedding present.

If you're having trouble getting a fine grind, you just hafta shake it. For espresso, I shake it for about thirty seconds and everything kinda turns out alright.
Sure, there are some beans that didn't get totally obliterated, but this is a ten-dollar coffee grinder that has lasted me for four years.

It's no $100 burr grinder, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want one of those, but this thing is like thirteen bucks! If this is your price range (i.e. the 2 large lattes price range) you really can't complain too much.

Your mileage may vary, of course, but I'd get this grinder's back if it took me to a party and s--t started to go down.

I bought this grinder for my wife this last Christmas. It's been two months now, and we are very happy with it. In this price range, I found 3 choices - Saeco Titan, Capresso 560 Infinity Burr Grinder, Black, and Breville BCG450XL Ikon Conical Burr Grinder. Burr grinders in the ~$50 range seemed unattractive (=not worth the money) from the reviews here. Both Capresso and Breville had consistently good reviews, Saeco Titan appeared to be a new model and did not have any. I decided to go find them all in a store and compare - well, easier said than done... In a major urban area, the only place where I found any of these grinders was a bigger Bed Bath and Beyond store (you'll see what I mean if you go to their website and look for a location near you; don't go to a regular BBBY). There was this model there, along with Capresso 564 - a more expensive, chrome, version of the $90 Capresso 560. I looked at both closely, and it didn't take long to choose the Saeco. Even though the Capresso felt heavier, more "solid" (at $139!), I liked less the design of the burr assembly and collar. Saeco also seemed easier to open, and the dial's position on the side more convenient. And yes, it is indeed made in Switzerland. The price was $130, but I had BBBY's 20% off coupon...
One thing I should stress, while we have used the Titan for 2 months, we have no experience using the Capresso model. It is of course entirely possible that, while having failed to impress me at the store, Capresso might actually grind better, who knows?.. I can speak for the Titan, though. For us the Titan does the job well enough. Easy to use, consistent operation, not too loud, and of course, a huge improvement over our previous $30 grinder. Will it grind fine enough for you? Well, it definitely does not grind fine enough for a proper Turkish coffee, but then none of these machines will. You'd have to pay more - many times the $130. You'll be better off buying Turkish-ground coffee from a good supplier or, if you must have it absolutely fresh, get one of those old-fashioned hand-driven coffee mills. I saw quite a few here on Amazon. Expect to pay ~$150 and need a set of strong hands, but those *will* give you the finest grinds.
We use our Titan at the coarsest setting and brew in French press, it seems perfect for that. Clean, consistent grind, no dust, and excellent brew, great taste.
One last thing I thought could be helpful if you don't get to see these grinders in a store - they all are smaller than they appear in pictures and take little space.

Editorial Review:

A key ingredient in the coffee making process is, well, coffee. Flavor is dependent on how the bean was roasted but you don't have much control over that. Another factor is the time elapsed from the time beans are ground to the time they're brewed. When freshly ground, coffee beans retain the actual oils, flavonoids and properties of the bean. With time (and brief time, at that), these natural properties dissipate. So if you're seeking the most flavors in your cups of coffee, a grinder is your best investment. The Saeco GT1 Titan Burr Grinder is a reliable unit for consistency throughout its 12 selectable settings for optimal performance for virtually any coffee brewing method. very poor 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After about 1 week of use the plastic cover would no longer latch. It doesn't appear that anything broke, but it must have worn slightly. I now have to continually apply a twisting pressure while grinding or else the grinder will stop.
Also, you cannot use it repeatedly, so if you like to grind enough coffee for a few days at once, this is not the machine for you. Just doing two fine grinds in a row causes it to smoke quite a *lot* and emit a nasty odor. I am not sure how this has gotten such good reviews. It is inferior to all the basic, $10-15 models I've tried.

Here is why there are all those "it stopped working" reviews 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The machine is not really a "hands free" coffee grinder. The clear plastic cover/cap has a safety mechanism such that the machine will not grind unless the cover is twisted firmly all the way into place. After some usage, in my case about a month, the cover starts to walk out of position ever so slightly because of the vibration from the grinding motor. The result is the grinder shuts off. Frustrating until I figured out what was going on.

I did not return the machine because 1) the solution is simple, hold onto the machine while it grinds away and 2) for that minor inconvenience it is a great grinder. The inside of the stainless steel bean cup is marked such that you fill it up to say 8 cups, set the dial for 8 cups, rotate the knob for the type of grind and the grinder delivers perfectly ground coffee. Espresso grind 8 cups is about 25 seconds of grinding. It takes all the guess work out of the regular automatic grinders that grind as long as you hold them. Not withstanding the holding of the top the machine has been great. I'm so happy to have perfectly ground coffee I don't worry about it. It would have been nice to have a longer cord, but I think they made the cord as long as they could without having to make the body thicker or resorting to the dreaded wrap-the-cord-around-the-bottom design.

It looks nice, cleans easily, the selection between amount and coarseness of grind make it easy to customize your grind, but I have been very satisfied with the factory settings. I have owned/used it for more than a year now.

Does a good job grinding and the removable bowl makes it easy to clean. Smaller size isn't great for large quantities, but makes enough for a 12 cup pot. Stainless surface has been easy to clean and fingerprints haven't been a problem. Highly recommended.

No Lifespan! 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I loved this grinder when we first got it because we use a french press, an automatic coffee pot, and an espresso maker. The array of grinds is wonderful! If it only lasted.... I had the same problem as everyone else, the ring broke & I found myself shoving paper in just to get a seal. Would be a superior product if they made it to last.

You get what you pay for.... 2 out of 5 stars.

I really liked this little grinder ("liked" being the key word here). The internal cord storage was easy to use and kept my countertops clear of cords. The one touch start and automatic shutoff so I didn't have to hold the button. Several different grinds. What more could I ask for? How about a longer lifespan? I had the same problem the first reviewer did. After only a few months of use, the ring at the top broke making it impossible for the cap to push the safety interlock switch. Walla....instant paperweight!

Coffee Burr Grinder 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This was not what I expected. Even on the finest number the grinds are too large for my taste. So far I am not impressed at all with it.

Good for the price 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For the price the grinder does a decent coarse grind. I haven't used any other settings beyond the French Press grind. The timer is somewhat fidgety, there is a static problem with the cannister, and the bean reservoir should have a tighter seal. In the end, it grinds better that the industrial grinders that supermarkets never maintain well enough and it's easy and quick to use. It's part of my morning routine and for the price I couldn't find a better electric burr grinder.

Not happy. 1 out of 5 stars.

It is great for rough grinds but barely does an expresso grind. It looks nice but thats it.

Stay far far away 1 out of 5 stars.

Worthless! The grind is much too course for use.
Mine is at the city dump if anybody want it.
