The 'classic' isn't always the best. 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Stovetop, 'moka'-style espresso is great. The bialetti is the 'classic' in this department. So, what's not to love? Well, the Bialetti is made cheaply, of aluminum and soft plastic. I've had several of these, and always end up burning them, melting the handle, or wrecking them in the dishwasher.

So, what's the alternative? Well, stainless steel works great here. There are other manufacturers that build stainless stovetop espresso makers that are substantially more durable, dishwasher-friendly, and make the same great 'moka'. I'm a fan of the Vev Vigano, but I'm willing to bet there are lots of other brands that are perfectly good choices.

Editorial Review:

With all the expensive espresso makers sold around the world, native Italians prefer espresso from stovetop espresso makers and more Italians use Bialetti for their stovetop Italian coffee. For an excellent cup of Italian coffee, the classic eight-side household coffeepot is considered a true Italian tradition. The Moka Espress boasts a lot of records and, as such, is the most copied coffee-maker! With sturdy aluminum construction, the Moka Express is a product that actually improves with constant use. The unit is extremely simple to use. Just fill the lower chamber with water and the filter with ground espresso coffee. Place the pot on the stove and heat until the water boils. As it does, the liquid espresso moves to the upper chamber of the pot, ready to be poured into an awaiting espresso cup. After that, all you need to do is enjoy the delicious nectar of coffee.

A couple of suggestions... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought my pot 3 years ago and it still works great. I changed the gasket one time. I've found it is better to leave it alone for the best seal. Also I modified the pot by putting a rubber hose (I used fuel line hose) on the end of the spout and having the coffee go directly into the cup. That way all the crema goes right into the cup. Otherwise when you pour the coffee into the cup, somehow the crema seems to disappear before one gets to sip it.

Good and easy 5 out of 5 stars.

Good coffee, and easier to use than the Moka Express.

I did have to return the first one for a leak, but the second one was worth the wait.

Modern & Functional 5 out of 5 stars.

The Bialetti Stovetop Percolator makes great espresso, just like any traditional espresso stovetop coffee pot and is easy to use. The sleek lines make it more attractive and modern looking and the quality of the coffee it brews is excellent. Highly recommend.

Editorial Review:

Sleek, tasteful, polished, and beautiful. The Venus takes an "out-of-this-world" approach for Bialetti, while still maintaining the classic functionality of a stovetop espresso brewer. This piece adds yet another look to the stainless steel collection from Bialetti. Our highest quality products at still affordable prices. Makes 4 (2 oz) servings.

Great Pot 5 out of 5 stars.

Makes a great cup of coffee, easy to clean. The handle broke on mine after nine months of use.

Saving $5 a day now... 5 out of 5 stars.

This little pot along with the Aerolatte Milk Frother makes great lattes and has been saving me $5 a day for the past couple weeks. I still plan to stop at my favorite coffee shop once a week or so to pick up some freshly roasted beans.

In all honesty, the coffee shop espresso is a bit richer than I have made in this so far. However, it is very good and I plan to continue saving myself $5 a day ($1,825 a year!)

Oh, if you don't like it, chances are good you may not be following the directions...Bialetti Class 4-Cup Stovetop Percolator

Editorial Review:

The HandPresso Wild is a hand-held, portable espresso maker. It makes real espresso using 16 bar of pressure to force hot water through the ground coffee in about 30 seconds. This is no gimmick, but a viable device for making espresso almost anywhere. HandPresso is made for use in the outdoors -- hiking, backpacking, camping, and for use anywhere you want espresso -- the office, outdoor concerts, the ball game, auto racing, your lunch break at the park, etc. Real, quality espresso can now be had almost anywhere. HandPresso has a built-in pump, operated just like a bicycle pump. You stroke it until the gauge's pointer is in the green zone -- 16 bars of pressure. The portafilter cap is then removed and hot water poured into the reservoir (please be careful not to burn yourself). You then lay an espresso pod in place (the HandPresso uses only E.S.E.-style espresso pods). The portafilter cap is then attached and secured. Now the fun begins. Simply turn the unit over and gravity places the hot water in contact with the pod. Push the Espresso Start button and the stored air pressure forces the water through the espresso pod, out the spout, and into your cup. It's that simple. For more shots -- simply repeat. The Handpresso Wild is constructed superbly. Many of the parts are constructed of velvet-finish plastic to give a good grip and be cooler to the touch. The unit arrives in an elegant black box.

fantastic 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have both the 4-cup and 2-cup Brikkas, and I use both regularly. The last time I checked online a few months ago, both were available in North America.

They both can make an equally delicious espresso with a nice crema on top. It doesn't matter which one you use in my experience. You just have to have faith and keep trying them before giving up.

They are both "high maintenance" coffee pots compared to regular espresso pots. You can't just dump water & coffee in them and leave them on the stove for 5 minutes while you do something else. Brikkas are like fine pieces of art that need to be handled and pampered in special ways. Everything is a delicate balance, and you have to baby sit them during the whole process. But once you get the knack of it, you will get consistent results...and trust me, it is worth the effort. Here are 5 tips:

1) Just before assembling your pot with coffee, make sure the valve is not stuck. Jiggle it up and down a few times.

2) Experiment with different types and brands of espresso coffee. Sometimes the grains may be too small (or too large). Unfortunately, you can't really tell just by looking at the grains. This is one reason why people give up on the Brikka too soon.

3) When the pot is on the stove, you have to keep an eye on the valve. If it is "stuck down" then the coffee will struggle too much to come up, and it will be over-brewed (has a burnt caramel smell and taste). If you feel it is "stuck" then immediately prop it up with a metal utensil (definitely not with your fingers). I rarely have to do this anymore with my pots. I always pre-jiggle the valve, and adding a drop of vegetable oil to a disassembled valve seems to have helped. But this is one reason why you have to keep an eye on your Brikka while it brews.

4) Also, I often pour the coffee before it has finished brewing. I'd say that when it is just over half brewed, that is when I pour it into the cup(s). Then I put it back on the hot stove for a few more seconds while the rest of the coffee comes up. Then I pour the rest of that into the cup(s). I seem to get more crema that way than just waiting for all the coffee to come up.

5) If you're adding milk to your espresso (cold or warm), I recommend pouring the milk into the cup(s) before the coffee. This seems to keep the amount of crema at its maximum when serving your cup. That is actually what you are showing off (the crema), so the last thing you wanna do is cover that crema with anything. I don't add sugar, but if I did, I probably would add it and stir it along with the milk. Again, you want to serve the coffee as soon as possible after pouring it so you and your guests can enjoy the maximum amount of crema.

All of this eventually becomes second nature to you once you get used to it.

Whenever guests come over now, they EXPECT me to use my Brikkas for them, otherwise they are insulted.

The coffee is just as good as any fancy $1000 machine could make and for a fraction of the cost, and a Brikka will outlast any expensive machine. And although a Brikka may be more complicated to use than a typical espresso pot, I don't think it is more complicated to use than a machine. For a cappuccino/latte, I use either a glass Bodem milk frother (for the microwave) or a metal Bialetti milk frother (on the stove-top).

I wouldn't recommend a Brikka for people with limited patience in the kitchen or a limited appreciation for a fine cup of espresso with crema.

You should note that the crema doesn't last too long, so the person waiting for his/her cup has to be ready to drink it soon after you pour it.

Also, the amount of coffee these pots produce is a lot lower than you would think for the physical sizes of the pots. This is my biggest complaint. Most would agree that the 2-cup Brikka barely makes 1.5 cups and the 4-cup Brikka barely makes 3 cups (I would say it only makes 2 cups!). So, I often have to use both pots at the same time depending how many people are over.

Editorial Review:

An innovation in stove top espresso makers from Bialetti. The new Brikka is specially designed with a patented and break-through Brikka System technology. Bialetti's Brikka is the only stovetop espresso maker on the market that produces the perfect "crema". This crema traps the fine aromatics and flavors that register on the palate adding a thick, richer texture to each cup of coffee. The Brikka is a 4-cup stove top espresso maker. Compare to the Aluminum Moka Pot 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Bialetti Musa 4-Cup Stovetop Percolator

I've owned a 6-cup "Moka Pot" for a couple years and recently purchased the Bialetti Musa 4-cup stovetop perconlator for $39 from amazon.

Moka Pot: Your standard Italian stovetop percolator that will last forever despite cheap construction. About $6 from the second-hand store, and very easy to find. Unfortunately, they're a bit more work -- the aluminum construction results in a metallic taste if not properly cleaned. The "proper" way to clean it is to use only hot water and leave the oily coffee film in the pot (to coat the aluminum and provide a barrier). So, it provides increasing returns if *not* cleaned. :)

Bialetti: Stainless steel -- easy cleanup, can use soapy water, no metallic taste. Harder to find (check amazon, health-food stores). Mine arrived via Amazon.com yesterday, no metal shavings or grease (as an earlier reviewer experienced).

As other reviewers have pointed out, the "4-Cup" version does 6-8 oz of espresso, so that's like that Starbucks "Venti" wonder that you're trying to avoid.

Here's an easy recipe that should kick you out the door in the morning:
6-8 oz espresso from Stovetop (1 Moka Pot)
1-2 Tbsp of sugar
6-8 oz of half-n-half
Throw it in the microwave for 30s, some like it hot.

Enjoy!

Doesn't quite deliver 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this Bialetti Mini Express as a present for my husband. We have several Bialetti mokas and are thoroughly satisfied with them so I did not hesitate in purchasing this one. Unfortunately, this model does not make two equal cups of coffee. One expresso is almost full and overly strong. The second cup is one third full and very weak. It is possible to mix the two for a double shot, but alone they are undrinkable. This product is a disappointment.

perfect solution 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been looking at electric countertop espresso makers for years, but was afraid to buy one because of the cost and size. We got one of these on a whim because it was so cute, and it has worked wonderfully! It only takes about 3 minutes to make 2 shots of esresso, and cleans up very easily.

Fast and good coffee 5 out of 5 stars.

This Bialetti mini express is the fast way to get an "almost" espresso coffee at home. The product has good quality and makes good coffee. I recomend.

never had a seal 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I got this as a present. I had used other cheaper modules of the same brand so I was very excited but the threads never matched up and it didnt seal enough to produce anything remotley like coffee let alone espresso. I was very disappointed that this one was so cheaply made that when I called the manufactures they said that becouse I had used it they wouldnt give me another one. I have had success with this manufacture in the past but beware they are hard to get a hold of and not very nice with there customer service.

Stainless espresso maker 5 out of 5 stars.

We bought this for our Mom for Christmas. It was difficult to find a stainless steel espresso maker at retail stores, they were all aluminum. The design, looks and functionality are what we were hoping to find. The price was fantastic and our Mom is very pleased with it. She frequently uses it with her girlfriends so the 6 cup capacity is just what she was looking for. We like it so much we want one too. Great product, great price!
