I'm tossing my Sintra today 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

After reading good reviews, I bought this machine sight unseen. Big mistake. Filling the reservoirs was cumbersome and you couldn't see the water level on the coffee and trying to make a half pot was very difficult. The espresso coffee holder didn't fit easily on the machine and sometimes it took five minutes of fiddling to get it to seat.(doesn't help that you can't see what you are doing). So soon we stopped making espresso, thus getting around the fact that a coffee mug won't fit under the espresso head. The coffee maker was mediochre. The lid over the basket fit poorly and was difficult to seat. It easily clogs and leaks all over the sink, even right after a cleaning. Today I'm off to Zabars to buy myself a new coffee maker. And it won't be a Briel.

Editorial Review:

It features a 10-cup drip pot and 15-bar pump, a warming plate for heating cups and an attractive, European design to top it off. In addition, the Briel espresso/coffee maker offers an Auto Espresso Flow micro-chip that lets you pre-select amount produced, ESE-adaptability with pods or grounds, a Turbo Jet frother for plentiful steam, Crema Master filter for rich, genuine crema every time and a stainless boiler. More features include a large, 1.8 liter water reservoir and water filter on intake, two thermostats for coffee and steaming cycles plus a third for safety, the AquaStop No-Drip system to eliminate remnant water, push button operation, a 10-cup drip coffeemaker with pause feature, removable overflow tray for simple cleanup and a built-in coffee tamper with separate measuring spoon.

I have been using the Ultima for over 4 years...... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed the taste of lattes having lived in San Francisco for many years and found myself in withdrawal when I had to return to St. Louis rather unexpectedly. I purchased the Capresso Ultima about the end of 2002 or early 2003 and was and have been fairly satisfied with this product from the get go. Here are a few things I've found in having brewed well in excess of a 1000+ cups and probably 75+ or more pounds of coffee in this machine:
1. Your coffee selection is key. If you like the Starbucks or Peet's or Border's latte taste, purchase a good dark roast.
2. Buy a burr grinder so you can get the right grind, not too fine and certainly not course. I use the DeLonghi. One word of caution, after using the finest turkish grind on my burr grinder for several cups, one day I discovered the coffe would not flow no matter how long I left the pump on. By the way, don't do this because your excess coffee simply flows into the overflow tray and gets wasted. To fix the problem I called the factory in New Jersey (I think) and was told to just return the central unit--nothing else. For $65, my charges, they sent back a new unit even though I had almost 2 years of use on it. It was returned within about 10 days. Excellent customer service.
3. If you like milky, thick foam then stick with 1 or 2 percent to get the best froth which you cannot get with whole milk or soy or rice milk for that matter.
4. DO NOT OVERHEAT THE MILK!!! This breaks down the fat molecules within the milk making it impossible to build a good froth.
5. Use a small colletor to gather the espresso and not the cup you used to steam the milk. I use this to collect the espresso and then pour it into the steamed milk. After a few cups you will quickly determine how much coffee to brew. Also, if you want an absolute great surprise, make a cappacino and let the machine brew the "crema" that seems to be the rage in espresso circles. The Ultima does an excellent job making crema.
For those who don't know, it's the tasty lighter coffee that is brewed at the end of the brewing cycle and has a wonderful milky-coffee taste.
6. The coffee is always HOT, HOT, HOT so please be careful when initially drinking it.
7. The hot water heater works wonders for the likes of hot chocolate mix.
8. I should add about the frother that you will experience a lot of steamiing water which probably shouldn't be there and disappears if you let the steamer run for a few minutes--do this in a separate container and dump the water, the steam will follow. Also the frothing wand is a two stage affair that generally heats the milk at first and then after a slight adjustment on the wand will produce a thick froth. Also, I move the cup with the milk around the wand to get good even heat to the milk.
9 From a cold start, to finished cup takes about 3 minutes--the heating element works extremely fast.
10. Always use distilled water not tap. This will result in a calcium deposit which will destroy the unit. If you drink a lot of this coffee, I'd recommend buying your own countertop water distiller.
11. All in all, I could not be more happy with this machine. My son who lives in Brooklyn uses a much more expensive model, over $1,000, and it produces a great cup of espresso---the Capresso Ultima does the same at almost one-fourth the price.
12. It is because of the water wastege that I gave this unit a four star rating.
13. To ensure consistent coffee taste, do take off the top, very easy procedure, and then rinse it under the faucet. The black, grounds container on the bottom tray should be emptied and rinsed daily after
each use.
14. If and when the time comes to replace, I'll go right back to the same unit--Love it, love it.
15. Finally, the plastic water container holds near perfect amounts of water to make approximately 7 cups of coffee.

Editorial Review:

Capresso "Ultima" eliminates all the inconvienent and sometimes difficult steps of conventional espresso machines: no more complications with filling, cleaning and rinsing baskets, tamping and hot filter holders. Just fill in pre-ground coffee to your liking (7 to 15 grams), pull the coffee lever down and turn the pump on. Within seconds the Capresso "Ultima" brews any size cup from one espresso to two six ounce cups of coffee always with wonderful crema on top. The double coffee spout even adjusts to accommodate different size cups.

Saeco Magic Cappuccino machine 4 out of 5 stars.

[Helpful? Not? Please vote, so I know someone is reading these :^) :: Beginner's Ease, but Decalcify, please. :: A great beginner's espresso maker. Also a no-muss, no-fuss alternative for those who want a cup of espresso, not a full-time hobby. It's easy to get drawn into the hunt for the "perfect pull" of espresso. If you're like me, and just want a "pretty dang good" pull every time, this machine is a nice option. To list why briefly:

* Hot water on demand; ready to cycle in less than a minute; nice for
..... warming/blanks
* Easy system priming JIC you run out of water; no turkey-basters - yuk!
* Pressurized (not commercial) portafilter is mostly idiot-proof - just keep it clean.
* Steam wand (pannarello?) is competent, but handle w/ care; it's partly plastic.
* Cappuccinatore is competent, but handle w/ care; it's partly plastic.
* Makes espressos, lattes and cappuccinos reasonably quickly
* Pods or loose ground coffee, pods are easier/cleaner, but cost more
* Cup warmer is ok, plus, again, there's hot water on demand
* Reservoir is a nice size, and easy enough to keep clean; plus it's clear
* Steam/hot water knob/valve feels substantial, and seals completely (you wouldn't
..... think this would be an issue, but it can be ...)
* Easy enough to wipe clean and maintain, though it could be easier to clean; I don't like cleaning.
* REMEMBER: Decalcify/Descale on schedule. It isn't hard, but very important.

Boilerplate: after having researched this machine on several sites that are run and maintained by true "coffee-snobs", aficionados and all-around experts, plus after reading most of what they had to say about 5 competing machines, this is the one I chose. It seemed to have the most features and highest ratings at it's price-point (~$300 or less) from the experts. It's a name brand, it has more goodies than I really see myself using, and the espresso pulls taste like the stuff you get in an Amsterdam or London cafe (or a Starbucks, for that matter). I got mine to avoid standard drip-coffee, and it sure is nice. I feel like I'm living the good life, and not continually spending a fortune at coffee shops. I calculated the breakeven point on this machine at 1 year (not considering the convenience and saved gas, etc. of brewing at home). I'm very pleased. If I win the lottery, I'll start looking at the more expensive, snootier, more temperamental machines. Until then, this is my 4-cylinder, automatic transmission, daily driver ;-) Did I mention the pressurized portafilter requires no tamping ... it's just too easy. Don't get roped into believing only a $1000-machine will satisfy your palate. Unless you're a professional-grade, skilled taste-tester, you will likely be able to find your own sweet spot with this machine, and save time and $$ doing it. Cheers!

Simple but Effective 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I had originally purchased the Krups version of their fanciest dual machine and it arrived non-functional with a display and buttons that were a little too "Star Trek" for me anyway...in fact, they didn't function at all. The Delonghi Caffe Nero (so far) has been very straighforward, easy to use, and produces good coffee and espresso. The quality of the coffee is moderate-high and I'm impressed with its strength selection system (a simple knob) and the mechanism by which it brews. No bells or whistles to confuse me. I did think initially that the permanent filter might be difficult to clean but not so far. However, the heat resistant coffee pot has an interesting design and a strange top which snaps on somewhat awkwardly and appears vulnerable to breaking but otherwise I have not found any major flaws with this machine as of yet.

Good coffee, good espresso, easy to use, easy to program for the next day. We'll see...

This machine doesn't froth 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've been making cappachino's for over 30 years with machines in this price range. I couldn't froth the milk with this particular machine and sent it back. I might have just gotten a lemon. But, if not, I hope this saves you the same trouble. The Gaggia machines and the Villa Ware machines work for me.

Worst espresso machine I've ever used... 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've owned 4 machines over a period of 30 years, starting with an old(er)-fashion piston-pump Riviera, a now expensive classic (the kind with the big lever arm you pull down) that I had completely rebuilt twice until I retired it for a Briel Lido (cheap & plain but reliable).

I had high hopes for this unit. It looks elegant in style with a metal body & clean lines & seems to operate in a straightforward way. But in actual usage it verges on the nightmarish. A previous poster has already eloquently described 2 of the ESP8XL's biggest shortcomings: its spring-loaded filter holder & its redesigned foaming wand.

I always make multiple cups of espresso, be it for straight shots, cappucinos or lattes. Therefore I fill & use at least 2 filters every time I make espresso. I had even already purchased the extra filters from Breville before even trying the unit for the first time. Disappointment quickly turned to frustration then to anger when I discovered how difficult it was just to *fit* the filter full with grounds into the holder (force was more like it) so tight was the spring. After considerable struggling I managed to get it in & make a cup. But to remove the now-heated (& full of damp grounds) filter was a real nightmare. I wound up having to use a paring knife to pry the filter from the holder, holding it with a kitchen towel to keep from burning myself. What a mess!

I called customer support & explained my problem. The chap on the line, while friendly enough, never seemed to have used an espresso machine, to say nothing of this model, suggesting such things as taking hold of the (burning hot) filter rim at the 2 indentations (about 1/8") in the holder. When I pointed out that the image of the filter holder in the manual showed a latch release while mine had none, he said that Breville had discontinued that feature & replaced it with the spring, they just hadn't updated the manual. Great! What lunacy. What I wouldn't give for the ability to pop the filter using that latch. Sadists at work.

I received this unit as a gift several months ago so can not return it, but have solved the problem of the filter holder by prying off the spring. Now the filters go in & come out easily as they should.

I rarely use the Breville to make espresso, mostly just to foam milk for my wife who likes it in her coffee. I should add that the previous reviewer was also correct in his assessment of the foamer. It does need to be turned on initially to release stored up water in order to get well-pressured steam.

Next time back to a European espresso machine (preferably Italian-made)for me. No more falling for the blandishments of clever marketing.

Editorial Review:

The Cafe Roma Espresso/Cappuccino machine by Breville is for the style conscious coffee lover. It is ideal for making a variety of coffee drinks from espresso and cappuccino, to lattes and machiattos. This espresso machine features a 15 bar Italian Thermoblock pump system, an advanced crema system with a froth enhancer, a removable 1.2 litre water tank, a removable drip tray with a water level indicator, a cup warming plate, 2 stainless steel espresso cups and a frothing jug.

Excellent Coffee but a Back Door For Hackers (yes I'm serious) 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is an attractive and very functional espresso machine with an impressive amount of settings to ensure you get the kind of drink you want out of it. Granted though, it is about $1000 more than other machines that will offer most of the same features and produce similar quality espresso. The only real difference between this model and cheaper models with similar features and quality is the chrome finish and the internet connectivity feature. I have used this machine before, unlike some of the other 1-star reviews. I do like it as an espresso machine I must admit. How can I give it 1-star then? That's because it's an open invitation to identity thieves and hackers.

While an espresso machine that can request maintenance on its own sounds pretty neat, this is actually the source of the 1-star rating I've given it. The internet connectivity feature (which requires software to be installed on a PC on your home network) allows remote hackers to alter settings on your coffee maker. They could change the temperature, flow rates, etc. possibly to the point of damaging the machine. They can also gain remote control of the PC you installed the software on. While this sounds like a fun source of pranks for the hacker, it makes for an over-priced coffee maker that's sounding more and more like a dangerous house-guest.

Leave this Trojan horse outside the city gates and get a more reasonably priced model. It does what it does well, but sadly that includes letting hackers into your kitchen. Consider the same brand's less feature-laden versions for example.
