Purchased this item for my 89 year old mother and she loves it. Just like she loved the previous two she had before it.

This item rapidly heats water so she can enjoy her morning and evening cups of coffee.

We have used the hotshots for many years. This is our fourth. It is not as substantial as the older ones and tends to "bend" forward when you dispense the water. Also, not as pictured as no beverage cup included; as with some older models AND as pictured.

Leaking water tank- defective mess!! 1 out of 5 stars.

I was thrilled with this machine for the first 3 weeks, then the water tank began leaking all over whenever the machine was brewing. It's a mess, the other reviews are accurate about the water leaking problem! I called DeLonghi, who claimed they never heard of this problem and advised me to return the machine. (I will also report that the customer service email address on their website isn't valid, and their customer service reps are not helpful and abrasive!!) I wanted an Italian machine, but this clearly wasn't the way to go. It sounds like a design flaw and they continue to sell defective equipment.

I am extremely happy with this little espresso machine! I read tons of the reviews before purchasing this, and have some responses that I would've appreciated before I bought this machine.

Knob- I haven't found this to be hard to turn at all, unless you have wet hands or something like that.

Frother- the "frothing attachment" just makes milk ridiculously bubbly. After taking it off, all the difficulty I had trying to froth milk was gone. For a beginner like me, it is good to know how easy it is!

Leaking- the machine hasn't leaked at all for me. It drips if you have excess pressure built up that you don't release.

Cheap parts- don't manhandle the thing and you will be fine! If you jerk on the brew basket when putting it on, it will break. The carafe is glass; don't drop it. Yes, some parts are plastic. It wouldn't be a good idea to step on them or anything. The carafe lid isn't tight, but it doesn't fall off or anything.

Coffee/grind- buy good coffee, grind it for espresso. I went to my local coffee shop, bought espresso beans and asked them to grind it for me. Perfect. No problems.

The only criticism I have for this machine is the serving size. You must make at least two servings. As best I can tell, one "serving" on this machine is about equivalent to two shots of espresso. You can't simply make less, because if you do there won't be enough steam built up to be able to froth the milk. In fact, I usually have to add extra water to make sure I have enough steam.

Read the instruction manual and you will have no issues.

I'm a smart shopper and this thing completely fooled me. I have no idea who rated this machine as great, because it's a HUGE rip-off. The steam for cappuccino doesn't work at all and the machine drips all around the grounds holder when brewing. It created a huge mess for two different people who tried using it. Both of us have experience with espresso machines, so that's not the issue. Looked like it was going to explode while brewing, spewing steam from every direction and dripping a huge mess. DON'T waste your time or money you think you're saving. It's a piece of trash.

I bought this little unit on the basis of positive reviews and indeed, I was impressed with it. But after only 6 months, the steamer stopped working and of course there's no way to fix it...it's not much fun having a latte maker without the capacity to make steamed milk...ah well, on to a more expensive, hopefully more reliable machine. Recommendations are welcome...

Danger: Does Not Always Turn Itself Off 1 out of 5 stars.

I wanted an electric kettle because sometimes I start the water heating, go to do some work in the home-office and then forget about the water. I ruined a tea-kettle last year doing this and wanted something that would turn-itself off. I've had this kettle (Proctor Silex) for 7 weeks. Twice it's failed to turn itself off. I return and almost all the water is boiled out and it's still going. Fortunately I haven't forgotten it for very long yet - but this is not what I want or need. I won't even use it now unless I'm standing right there.
NOTE: I keep the kettle clean, have not submerged it in water, and the second time I checked to be sure it was firmly on the base (in contact). So this behavior of not turning off is not something I did wrong.

My wife just hates learning new home technologies, in spite of the fact that she is highly skilled working with high technology tools in her career. I came back from a recent trip and she had fired up our new Breville espresso machine while I was gone. She loved it, and couldn't wait to show me how to use it. In two minutes she got me up to speed in turning out great espresso using the double wall insert thiggamajiggies (and I am pretty fussy about the taste of my espresso). Her parents had arrived for a visit so she started turning out espresso drinks in rapid succession. Haven't yet noticed any problems with the grinder, but will take heed of others' comments about taking care not to get any water in the mechanism. It is a little bit of a hassle to switch from regular to decaf beans, but not a deal breaker at all. This is one nifty machine. Well made and attractive too.

Over time steam will ruin this machine.. As above reviews wrote, my machine stopped working after about 8 months.

I've had this machine for about 18 months. After about 6 months of use, the coffee side started leaking until now it does not work any more. I contacted DeLonghi and all they had to say was to take it to a service center, which by the way are few and far apart. My previous coffee/espresso machine was a Krups and it lasted for 10 years. I will never buy DeLonghi products again and certainly do not recommend this product. Mine will go into the trash and we'll replace it with another brand.

and Bunn does not sell the little 50 cent gasket/rubber washer that is the cause of the leaking. Hopefully my local old fashion hardware store will have a gasket that will work. If you buy a Bunn, it will leak, the question is when. It is still a great coffee maker, and I guess by not making the parts available they sell more units. My current (and now leaking) coffe pot is about 7 years old so that's pretty good, but is sure seeems a waste to have to replace it for lack of a little rubber washer.
