I bought this coffee maker about 8 months ago and have used it almost every day since. It makes consistently excellent coffee, hotter and MUCH fresher tasting than any automatic drip I've ever had. It is no harder than an automatic drip maker to clean and you don't have to deal with soggy filters. In fact, usually I make coffee in the morning and wash the percolator at night and actually ENJOY cleaning the percolator because it's all stainless steel and easily gets cleaner than the plastic parts of an auto-drip. Part of it is because you can actually hand wash every surface the water and coffee will touch, unlike the plastic reservoirs you dump water into on an auto-drip. I actually get cravings for coffee at night while I'm cleaning it and look forward to the morning when I can brew another pot. When I periodically clean it with Dip It cleaner for percolators, it's like having a brand new percolator. To sum up: FRESH, delicious coffee!

For some reason, the handle was wrapped separately from the pot. There's a screw in the handle, but no hole in the pot for a screw so I can actually attach it. Am I supposed to drill a hole and hope the screw is long enough? Don't think so -- this item will be returned tomorrow.

If you grew up in the 1940's and 1950's, it's more likely you saw a coffee percolator like this one on your parents' stovetop. The origins of the percolator go back to about 1818 in France. Okay, this is a "coffeemaker," but it is titled an "automatic party perk" and we purchased it to heat water for hot chocolate. I have seen mulled cider and cocoa served from similar percolators many times, so I don't think we are the only ones who have planned to use the 58030 in this way.

Our method was to get the water hot, then stir in hot chocolate mix and serve. The cocoa was usually in the pot for less than 25 minutes at most, and we had made it a maximum of 8 times when, without warning, it overheated. There was the smell of burning plastic and even the cord began to get hot, so we unplugged it and found the bottom covered with blackened residue--this with many cups of water still inside!

In talking to the customer service rep--a very pleasant, very helpful young woman--we were led to page 5 of the manual where there was a statement saying "Other than making coffee or heating water, no other liquid should be heated in coffeemaker as damage to heating unit can occur." This danger was not noted in the three pages of heavily stressed warnings that started out the booklet, and there is no other reference on packaging, etc., to the need to avoid using these "party perks" for things like hot chocolate or even mulled cider.

Since this very nearly caused a fire, I believe that the comment should be moved up to the warning section and a statement should be added to the packaging to alert potential customers "This product is to be used only for coffee and hot water." Very disappointing--and scary--that a company as reputable as West Bend would be allowing such a potential hazard to be so little noted.

Just as I said in the title, this thing does what it is supposed to do,, except really slow. Not a problem if you plan for it. Use course ground coffee, fill the bucket with water, turn it on - and wait for 2hrs. Then you have 42 cups of jo that stays hot for a long time.

Great item -- highly recommended 5 out of 5 stars.

This product has definitely lost its quality. We had a Farberware percolator that lasted 15 years. It finally quit and we bought a new one expecting the same quality. The new one lasted less than 18 months. Customer service department was not helpful. It makes great coffee. But considering its cost and short life span, it's not worth it. I will not buy a Farberware electric percolator again.

So hot, you can BOIL EGGS in the coffeepot......seriously 5 out of 5 stars.

That's how I like my coffee. Hot! And those popular coffeemakers just don't cut it. Without the gas stove one day, I put 3 eggs in the water for over an hour and half, and whoooola! The eggs boiled in the hot water. I just plugged and unplugged a few times for fresh heat.

It is rare that I see people using these Farberware coffeemakers, and for some reason they are stuck with those dreadful Mr. Coffee-type-things. This is a percolator, meaning it brews coffee OR, simply use it as a drip coffee maker. Either way, it works great! And it just takes minutes.

But I love these coffeepots, mainly because the coffee comes out nice and hot! That's right the coffee is hot, and it stays hot. You don't have to worry about warm coffee here. You can leave it plugged and it will maintain the heat for long time. Unfortunately there isn't a light indicator that states the pot is still plugged.

The innards!
The pot comes with the innards, the stem, and coffee holder and the lid over the coffee holder. I use a standard filter, poke a hole with the stem and within minutes, the aroma of good hot coffee.

I have had a few and will always use a Farberware coffeepot!....Rizzo

Percolated coffee is an acquired taste, but for those who like it strong and black, this stovetop coffee pot is the way to go. The percolator's polished stainless steel exterior and stepped base give it a vintage look and its brewing methods are strictly old school; however, its construction is completely up to date. Water pours into the bottom of the pot and the pump tube with the filter basket goes in next. Coffee drinkers add their grinds to the filter basket and then place the cover over the basket. Once the lid is tightly secured, the percolator can be put on a gas or electric heat source for brewing. When the water boils, it travels up the pump tube and through the grounds and the familiar sloshing of brown liquid in the lid's transparent plastic knob signifies that percolation has begun. After about 5 to 7 minutes of percolating, coffee is ready for drinking. This pot brews about 4 to 8 cups of coffee and a handy water level indicator etched into the side ensures that brewers add the appropriate amount of water for their grinds. I love my coffee pot, I purchased it to make tea. It makes a nice strong brew and I enjoy the vintage look and the fact that I can see the strength of my tea. A word of caution. It comes with a metal ring stuck inside the flap of the box. This is to be used as a trivet whenever brewing on an electric stove. I didn't realize this at first, and brewed my first pot without it. Happily no harm was done,and my pot didn't break as a result of the intense heat.

Now my problems with the pot: The lid is plastic, and because of the heat, it seems to have expanded. It no longer fits snuggly on. So far this hasn't been a huge problem,and I am hoping that it is finished expanding. Also, this morning I emptied the pot into my husband's cup and placed the pot back on the burner...big mistake. Even though the burner was off, the residual heat melted the bottom of my percolator insert. I should have known better. I think had there been some tea left in the pot, there wouldn't have been a problem. All in all, I don't know if I would purchase this pot again. I think I'd rather shop around thrift stores until I find an authentic vintage pyrex percolator with metal insert. "They just don't make things the way they used to!" For now, I'm shopping for a metal insert for this one.
