Makes very good espresso, excellent frother 4 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this unit after getting disappointing results with a Cuisinart model. I didn't research it much; it was on the shelf at my local retailer so I gave it a try. I really didn't have very high hopes, because the Delonghi is a little "plasticky" compared to the Cuisinart, and because I typically don't trust devices that are fully automatic.

Well, I was VERY pleasantly surprised with this model and I have been using it 2-3 times per day for about a month.

Here's a quick rundown on how the machine works. You fill the bean hopper with coffee beans, and the water tank with (obviously) water. You turn the machine on, and it takes about a minute to warm up. It drips about an ounce of water, probably to heat and flush the machine. I catch it in a mug and dump it.

To make an espresso, you put a cup or two under the spouts, and press the single or double shot button. The machine grinds, clunks and whirs, and after about 30 seconds it begins dispensing espresso, nice and warm with a good layer of crema. The espresso is robust and tastes great.

To froth milk, you switch on the frother, and catch the water that comes out with a mug. When it turns to steam (about 10 seconds), you submerge the tip into the milk and begin frothing (use a frothing thermometer for best results). This is where the machine really shines--it is a strong frother compared to the other units I've tried.

It is true that this model is mostly plastic on the outside, so it may not be the pride of the countertop for the appliance-status-conscious. On the other hand, though, it is a fully automatic unit for well under $1000, and it makes great beverages. I have no regrets with this purchase.

Editorial Review:

A magnificent piece of high performance machinery, De'Longhi has packed pro-quality technology into this countertop unit for perfect, steaming hot espresso every time. Featuring a stainless steel double boiler and beans-to-brew system, you're guaranteed an espresso that's bold and tasty thanks to coffee freshly ground right in the machine. One-year limited warranty.

Better than machines 10 times more expensive. 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a coffee snob with every piece of brewing and grinding equipment a consumer can have. Seriously. There isn't a brewing method I don't have the machine for. I've used Moka espresso makers before and loved them, but didn't like that they required supervision on the stovetop. If the flame is too hot or too cool it doesn't come out right. The electricity-based Alicia takes out all the guesswork and tweaking.

I used to split time evenly between a Stainless Steel French Press, a Saeco Espresso machine, and a Cuisinart drip coffee maker. It all depended on what I felt like that day. That was before my Alicia was gifted to me. I've had it now for five months and I have not used any other machine since.

It is the Goldilocks of brewing methods. If I want espresso I use a finer grind and less water. If I want something akin to a drip coffee I use course grinds and top off with hot water. If I want a milk-based drink it's good for au laits and lattes if you adjust the grind right- you have to fire up a stovetop of espresso machine for the milk of course -it even makes a wonderful hybrid somewhere between espresso and coffee that only it can produce (a dark strong coffee, but with crema...tears to my eyes). Instant iced coffee. Mild Roasts, Medium Roasts, dark or extra dark. ALL delicious. It is just about idiot proof. I can't remember making a bad cup of coffee with this thing.

I cannot say enough good about it- compact, easy as hell to clean, economical (use less beans, don't need filters), quick, everything you could want in a home brewing machine. In short, if you love coffee: GET ONE.

Now all Delonghi needs to do is make one four times as big for when I have company over.

Editorial Review:

The style of this sleek, ultramodern 3- to 6-cup espresso maker will complement any contemporary kitchen. Just fill the aluminum boiler with water and the filter with ground coffee, and in just a few minutes you'll have authentic Italian espresso. Simply remove the transparent container from the base to serve. It's durable and easy to clean. The warm function keeps espresso hot for 30 minutes. Other features include a filter adapter that lets you choose between three or six cups, an on/off switch with indicator light, a pressurized safety valve and a cool-touch handle. Cordless operation. Model EMK6.

Yup, it's official Krup is Krap 1 out of 5 stars.

Bought this to great excitement at C&B today. Then read the online reviews to some dismay. Sure enough I spent 30 minutes reading the instruction manual so I wouldn't screw it up. Then proceeded with the step by step cleaning instructions. I could not get this machine even to suck up any water at all. It just sat there grinding away nothing but the smell of overheating electrical appliance. I'm taking it back tomorrow and getting the Gaggia. Krup is krap.

Good coffee, but falls apart 2 out of 5 stars.

I received this as a gift for Christmas 2006. We are now coming up on Christmas 2008 and it's completely broken. Through the two years I have had this, I have consistently had problems. I had to buy a new seal, I frequently have to take the seal out for rinsing (which involves a screwdriver), I've had leaks--more like pours. It is very stressful trying to fix an espresso machine for the 15th time when you haven't had any coffee! It is now beyond repair. I believe this time it is the pump (something is broken and the pressurizer can't pressurize).

I make one or two espressos a day, so I don't think I'm that hard on a machine. My previous (cheap) machine lasted five years until I gave it away in working condition when I received this one.

So--this machine makes good espresso, but it does not hold up over time and is thus not worth the investment. Disappointing! But true.

Very good machine 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Use it at least twice daily with both ESE pods and ground espresso. It really is a nice machine. If you are like some other reviewers and have problems with coffee grounds blowing out over the kitchen after you are done then you are likely tamping them too hard or using a grind that's too fine. Easiest way for a first time user is to buy some coffee in ESE (easy serve espresso) pods from the internet and feel it to see how hard the coffee is tamped in the pod. Cut it open and see how finely it is ground. Go to the grocery store and grind a pound of your favorite roast to about the same grind. At my grocery store the second or the third finest setting works fine. You can use your own grinder but a good burr type grinder costs some money and the less expensive blade grinders are useless for espresso. Tamp it to about the same hardness as the pod was. It makes wonderful espresso with lots of crema on top. I've never had an issue with grounds or steam blowing out after I release the pot--even with the machine on and waiting just until the coffee stops dripping to detatch it. I don't see how you could go wrong, but some obviously do.

This one looks nice. It works well. Has a self-priming pump (a good feature that alot don't include). It comes with a tamper, a stainless-steel frothing cup, filter holders for pods, single, and double shots. It also includes 2 tolls to clean the little holes the espresso is pumped through. It comes with pretty much everything you would end up buying for it in the first year. I have a water softener so scale will never be a problem but you would want to descale it once in a while if you don't use distilled water. The only thing I wish it had was a dial thermometer so I could watch the water temp more closely. I believe that it has an aluminum boiler. I would prefer brass but you just can't get it at this price. The pump makes some noise but not more than any other I've used. Steam espresso machines are cheaper, much quieter but burn the coffee and it doesn't taste nearly as good.

Overall, very good product, easy to use and the best value by far at this price.

My machine stopped much stopped working after 6 months. The espresso will not come out when the light says it's ready. Every once in awhile before it stopped working it would decide to make a serving but would'nt make another afterwards. I called to use my warranty and they wanted $20 for shipping. I only paid $60 for the machine. So I didn't think it was worth the trouble.

Cappuccino Drinker since 1985 5 out of 5 stars.

I discovered Expresso/Cappuccino when I lived in Naples Italy, 1985-1988, with my military spouse. Upon returning home, I found I simply couldn't live without Cappuccino. But in 1988, Cappuccino was not popular and I tried the smaller machines - they were messy and difficult to work with. Then I found and purchased the affordable Hamilton Beach model with the water reservoir in 1995. I use it to make at least one 15 ounce cappuccino every day (sometimes twice a day). I am totally happy with this product. I recently purchased my 3rd Hamilton Beach (I do use it a lot)! So I have been using this product for about 13 years. It makes great cappuccino and like anything, it is a whole lot cheaper making it at home.

Two for Two with Defective Machines 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Last December I bought the BCO-130T machine. I thoroughly enjoyed it - the coffee it made and the very good espresso and cappuccino. It worked fine for awhile. About June/July it started leaking water from the bottom of the machine. I called the suggested repair facility in Virginia. As soon as I started to explain the problem to the owner, he told me the problem and that it was common and the machine would be replaced. I sent it in for repairs. Well that process took about 8 weeks, an absolutely ridiculous amount of time.

I finally get a replacement and now a couple/few months later this new machine is also leaking. So now I am two for two of machines that are defective and do not work. Although I have "had" the machine for about 11 months I have not been able to use it but about 8+months.

I have no confidence whatsoever in going through the process again not to mention that I will again have to pay shipping and be without a coffee maker for weeks. To spend ANY more money on this inferior product would be throwing good money after bad.

Excellent value 4 out of 5 stars.

I don't know why some of these people are complaining, I've owned this coffee maker for over two years now with daily use. It still works just as well as the first day we got it: perfect coffee every time. It's easy to use, great size and design, large capacity, and great style. My one complaint is that it would be good if there were a separate water reservoir for the steam system, it's very easy to accidentally brew with the extra water that's intended for steaming with.

didn't work for long 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought this coffee maker for my husband to replace an old dual machine we had for years. We only used the expresso side on occasion but the drip coffee maker got used more regularly, but not everyday. After about 16 months, it stopped working. The water would not heat or go through the filter. Thankfully I bought it at [...] so they took it back well past the warranty and gave me a full refund. Given our experience and the short-lived nature of this machine, I would not recommend it.
