After burning through several less expensive Wahl Mart type food processors, I decided the time had come to get serious about food prep. I tend to obsess over these things, and, as is usual for me, began an intense investigation into quality (within affordable reason) food processors. I eventually narrowed it down to either Cuisinart or KitchenAid. Both seemed pretty good and had reasonably good reviews. I finally decided on the KitchenAid KFP740 (9 cup), and I've been pleased with my purchase. I've owned it just over a year now.

Following are a few comments from my personal experience with this machine that might be of use to you.

First of all, the comments about the design of the bottom opening is correct. It is quite shallow. This simply means that if you want to get the full 9 cup capacity this unit offers, you will have to use more-or-less dry ingredients. Veggies, meats, etc. You get the picture. If you try to process something down to the puree or liquefied stage, you risk leakage from the bottom center opening. It is pretty obvious to me that KitchenAid simply doesn't want you to use this machine for liquefying. That is a job they feel, rightly or not, best left to a blender. Now don't misunderstand me. The processor is more than capable of pureeing or liquefying. The motor is so powerful I believe you could liquefy a tree in it. But it could turn out to be a messy operation.

Secondly, I purchased the optional wide mouth lid and pusher (sold separately, for some insane reason). They make a huge difference when shredding, slicing, etc. I've also added a couple of extra blades, although the ones that come with the processor do the bulk of the work. For whatever it is worth, I found the french fry blade to be rather worthless. The wide mouth feed tube allows me to place a medium sized whole potato in horizontally, exposing as much area as possible to the blade. Regardless, while the processor makes astonishingly fast work of the potato, the blade renders thin, shoestring-like strips.

I've used the mini bowl several times, and it works fine for chopping small items or small amounts. Removing it from the large bowl takes some practice.

Without any doubt, this is a fine operating machine, but the "big mouth" is a disappointment, because for my purposes, it just isn't.

I bought this in 2007 as an upgrade from a smaller Cuisinart, which was an excellent machine, solely for the advertised "big mouth" feature because I wanted to use it principally for slicing vegetables. I want to be able to very thinly and evenly slice English cucumbers and other vegetables. The large opening seemed perfect until I received it and saw very little improvement over the opening in my old one (which I had already given away by then).

Perhaps, if I wanted to slice items lengthwise the opening might be more useful but that is not what I want to do with it. Even fairly slim English cucumbers have to be quartered lengthwise to fit down the feed tube. I could understand if the opening might not accept an onion, but to be touted as having a large opening yet not accept something as slim as an E. cucumber is a bit misleading.

If you want to use this for any other purposes it is probably a superb machine. Just be aware that if the big mouth capability is important to you, that you may be disappointed. I don't want a machine that I could fit a hand into, of course, but I believe Cuisinart could do much better than this.

Our old blender (the cheap one from big box store)has given up the ghost. I wanted a GOOD model to work with. My husband surprised me with this and other than it's a little loud, it works like a champ. The first thing we did was crush ice. LOT'S of it. It never labored or nuthin. It chopped to a snow good enough to make snow cones. COOL!!! I've not had much chance of yet, to work with the duo part of the food proceesor, but how handy is this?? As I said, other than being a little noisy,it looks and feels very sturdy. Doesn't move around and has a REAL glass jar. Very nice! I don't think anyone would be unhappy with this machine at all.

We purchased this Food processor after an extensive research, reading reviews on various sites, checking the product manuals and etc.
We had to return it after giving it couple of tries. Did not meet expectations whatsoever. The most disappointing was the fact that you could put only up to 5 (five!) cups of liquid into so called 12 cups food processor. This was NOT disclosed anywhere. This makes it pretty useless for most of the applications. Second biggest disappointment was that it leaked over the center under a stem. Cleaning was a nightmare. When we tried kneading the dough it was a disaster. With 2.5 cups of flour the machine would dance all over the counter. Dough would escape through the center and get under the stem. Try to get it out! We were quite patient and gave it couple of tries but gave up at the end! We returned it and bought a 14 cups Elite Cuisinart Food Processor. It has MOST of the attachments, much better ADJUSTABLE slicing disk, more convenient storage container, does not leak, has a separate dough setting and the same 3 bowls design which was one of the most convincing reasons for purchasing of this one. And - yes - it holds up to 10 cups of liquid in the main bowl and the level is marked on each bowl as well! I would definitely research that one if you are looking. It is just A BIT bigger but SO MUCH better!

I loved this combination food processor-blender. It did all the work I needed, it was easy to switch out the different parts of the unit, and easy to wash and clean.

I bought the unit in late 2004, and used it until late 2008, so it lasted for 4 years.

Unfortunately, the warranty is only for 3 years and the motor burned appears to have burnt out. I would expect a blender that costs this much to last much longer especially given that I did not use it all that frequently.

For the first couple years, it performed very well, then it started to have trouble crushing frozen fruit, let alone ice. Then one day it stopped working altogether.

I may try to take it to a local repair shop, but I'm hesitant to spend the time and money to ship it off to the cuisinart repair when they are unable to give me a quote for the cost of the repair.

Update May 2010: The repair shop was unable to fix it, as the electics had gone out; it costs more to replace them than to buy an entirely new unit. The repairman said that the prices on these items had gone down significantly because they are using cheaper parts. He thought I was lucky and unusual to have had mine last for so long. At any rate, when I looked at new blenders, I thought I was buying the same unit, but I accidentally got the cheaper: Cuisinart BFP-703CH SmartPower Duet Blender / Food Processor,
$78.49 ; I couldn't recommend that one LESS--very cheap and poorly made.

At any rate, I recently used my friend's top of the line cuisinart that is expressly for food processing. It slightly bigger and heavier than this model. It is far quieter and it is done processing in a couple of seconds vice a minute or so. I strongly recommend going that route.
